Between “full moon and summer solstice”. The quest for transcendence in the poetry of Andrzej Busza

2019

The article is an attempt to describe the poet’s vision of human destiny, history and transcendence. Analysing poems from two poetry volumes I endeavour to present Busza’s philosophy. The poet notes and appreciates science and scientifi c achievements as well as civilisational development, although he realises that they may be dangerous for human spirituality and potentially lead to catastrophe.

Seabird migration strategies: Flight budgets, diel activity patterns and lunar influence

2021

Every year, billions of birds undertake extensive migrations between breeding and nonbreeding areas, facing challenges that require behavioural adjustments, particularly to flight timing and duration. Such adjustments in daily activity patterns and the influence of extrinsic factors (e.g., environmental conditions, moonlight) have received much more research attention in terrestrial than marine migrants. Taking advantage of the widespread deployment in recent decades of combined light-level geolocator-immersion loggers, we investigated diel organisation and influence of the moon on flight activities during the non-breeding season of 21 migrant seabird species from a wide taxonomic range (6 …

Spectroscopic Detection and Structure of Hydroxidooxidosulfur (HOSO) Radical, An Important Intermediate in the Chemistry of Sulfur-Bearing Compounds

2013

The rotational spectrum of hydroxidooxidosulfur, HOSO, an intermediate of particular interest in the combustion of sulfur-rich fuels, has been determined to high accuracy from gas-phase measurements. Detection of specific isotopic species using isotopically enriched gases suggests that HOSO is formed in our discharge nozzle via the reaction H + SO2 (+M) → HOSO (+M). A precise experimental r0 geometry has also been derived from the isotopic analysis; HOSO has a cis configuration, but the subtle structural question of its planarity remains unresolved. From the derived spectroscopic constants, in situ and remote sensing for this fundamental radical can now be undertaken in a variety of environ…

The Religion of Ammon

2015

The Ammonites, a people living east of the Jordan River, were neighbors of the ancient Israelites. The Old Testament (1 Kings, 11,5; 2 Kings, 23,13) and probably an inscription from the citadel of Amman mention Milkom as the supreme God of the Ammonites. Most Ammonite names did not contain the name of their national god, but used a more generic divine name, ’El. We don’t know if the name: ’El refers to the Canaanite god or to a local manifestation of this deity. Ammonites also worshiped other deities (i.e. ‘Astarte, ‘Anat, Ba‘al, Hadad/’Adad, Qos, Samas, YHWH and Yerah). A number of limestone statues and clay figurines of bearded individuals wearing an atef-crown could be Ammonite monarchs …

Calibration of the Lunar Orbital X-ray Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer (LOXIA) of Chang'E-1 satellite at INAF-OAPA

2007

The Lunar Orbital X-ray Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer (LOXIA) designed and constructed at the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to perform chemical composition analysis of the Moon surface will operate on-board the Chang'E-1 mission, the first Chinese lunar spacecraft to be launched in 2007. We report the main results of the calibration measurements that we have performed using the X-ray beamline of the XACT facility of INAFOsservatorio Astronomico di Palermo G.S. Vaiana to determine the quantum efficiency of the XRS detector in the soft X-rays as a function of photon energy and angle of incidence.

Conflicts between touristic recreational activities and breeding shearwaters: short-term effect of artificial light and sound on chick weight

2018

Human disturbances are increasingly becoming a conservation concern for many populations of colonial seabirds. Colonially reproducing species are particularly vulnerable to localised disturbances because detrimental elements can simultaneously affect the entire population. Studies of petrels and shearwaters have shown that light pollution, in particular, can be harmful for both fledglings and adults, but little is known of the way such anthropogenic elements affect the quality of parental care at the nest. Chick provisioning in petrels and shearwaters occurs exclusively at night and is also negatively correlated with the amount of moonlight. We tested the hypothesis that high-intensity ligh…
